The Next Generation of Enterprise AI: A Fixed Execution Layer and an Evolving Knowledge Layer
As enterprise platforms evolve, an important question is emerging: if an ERP already has a mature framework for documents, workflows, permissions, business rules and security, should an AI agent build a separate system around it?
Our view is that the more sustainable approach is for AI to work within the systems businesses already trust. The ERP continues to govern its data, processes, permissions and business logic. The AI layer complements that foundation rather than competing with it.
A recent discussion in the Frappe community raised a related question about the intelligence inside an enterprise agent: is it fixed and static, or growing and dynamic? In Noviz, the answer is both, by design.
A Structured Execution Layer
The core execution methods in Noviz are predefined and classified by purpose:
- DocType tool calls
- Custom queries and execution
- The analytics engine
- Notifications
- Reports
This layer is fixed and structured. Every action runs through a known method, within the permissions of the signed-in ERP user, and the ERP remains the source of truth.
An Evolving Business Knowledge Layer
The knowledge artifacts sit alongside the execution layer:
- Company policies and rules for each module
- Manuals that define workflows and business processes for each ERP implementation, customised or standard
This layer evolves as company policies, rules, manuals and workflows change. The agent does not need to be rebuilt when the business changes; its knowledge is updated.
Standardisation with Room for Customisation
The architecture supports a level of standardisation that works across different businesses, while specific services and workflows can be customised by domain, ERP workspace and individual business requirements.
This matters most for organisations with customised ERP environments. AI integration should adapt to the existing application and its business context, rather than requiring an organisation to redesign the way it operates.
One Principle Across Platforms
The same principle applies as we extend Noviz from ERPNext to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central. The platforms differ in architecture and ecosystem, but the existing ERP continues to govern its data and processes, and AI becomes an additional intelligence layer across established enterprise systems. The organisation remains in control.
Structured execution. Evolving knowledge. The ERP remains the source of truth.
